FEAST OzHarvest Cooking in Classrooms Program

In Cooking with Ms Kate, students take part in the Oz Harvest FEAST program, a hands-on learning experience that teaches healthy cooking, sustainability, and the importance of reducing food waste. Students explore a variety of recipes and kitchen techniques, gaining confidence while preparing nutritious meals.

A key focus of the program is “no waste in the kitchen.” Students learn to use every part of a vegetable wherever possible stalks, skins, leaves, and all. Any unavoidable scraps are added to our worm farm, where the worms turn them into nutrient-rich compost. This compost is then used to feed our school’s vegetable garden.

Students also learn about the full cycle of food. Seeds are saved, replanted, and grown into fresh vegetables, which are harvested for future cooking sessions. The class helps care for the garden by watering and maintaining the plants, developing responsibility, and a deeper connection with where food comes from.

Through this program, students build practical cooking skills, understand sustainability in action, and discover the joy of growing and preparing their own food.
